Twenty years ago the RSPB Reserve at Arne was closed to the general public and, without a permit, you could only walk down the main bridal-way to Shipstal Point and back.

Since then they have steadily opened up the site with a series of way-marked paths, the longest of which, the Red Route, makes a very pleasant and varied stroll of about 4km (2.5mls) in length.

As well as the fine views over the salt marshes along the southern shore of Poole Harbour and the associated waterfowl that makes this a bird watchers' paradise, the reserve is also home to large numbers of deer. These show relatively little fear of humans and you can get quite close to them.

For further information, please see the RSPB's web site. There is a leaflet, detailing the marked paths, available from the kiosk in the car park.
