Ballinskelligs is best known, in so far as it is known at all, for its long sandy beach and as a water sports centre.
However it is also the home to two ruins at either end of a spit of land that runs across the mouth of the Ballinskelligs River.
At the landward end is Ballinskelligs Priory, where the monks from Skellig Michael eventually settled when they returned
to the mainland.
At the far end of the spit is Ballinskelligs Castle built by the McCarthy Clan, who were also responsible for
Ballycarbery Castle near Cahirsiveen.
