Departing from Gunwharf Quays and calling at the pier next to Boathouse 4 in the Historic Dockyard,
the Portsmouth Harbour Tour takes you round into the working naval dockyard and the adjoining ferry port.
At the time of my visit all six of the new Type 45 Destroyers were in the yard, due in part to the disastrous teething problems with their propulsion systems.
Moored off Whale Island is HMS Bristol, the only Type 82 Destroyer ever built, the rest of her class having been cancelled following a change of government.
She was launched in 1969 as a test bed for new technologies.
She had a long career with the Navy and saw action in the Falklands War. In 1987 she was converted to a training ship,
and since 1991 has been located next to the shore establishment HMS Excellent on Whale Island.
