Got it

Location

Gwynedd Map

Huge sandy beaches, fine pubs, some good buildings, two railway stations (on one of the most scenic lines in the country) and a stunningly beautiful river estuary. What's not to like.

OK, Aberdovey (Aberdyfi) might be lacking in bright lights, for those who like that sort of thing; for those of us who don't, this could be seen as an advantage.

To the east is Penhelig, once a ship building area, now home to some very desirable waterfront properties and the renowned Penhelig Arms.

The latter has recently been through a bit of a bad patch from which, at the time of writing (2013), it seems to be emerging. Although there is still a little way to go, I'd happily to recommend it.

3 Troop 10(1A) Commando Monument

Location

Gwynedd Map

This monument in the public gardens at Penhelig commemorates the members of 3 Troop 10(A) Commando.

As the nearby plaque explains, this troop consisted of 86 German-speaking refugees from Nazi oppression.

They rendered distinguished service in reconnaissance, interrogation and intelligence work.

Panorama Walk

Location

Gwynedd Map

The Panorama Walk is a no through road leading out of Aberdyfi up on to the hills to the north. It can be difficult to find; if you spot a sign to Llyn Barfog (Bearded Lake) then follow it.

From here there are magnificent views, both to the south over the Dovey Estuary into mid-Wales, and to the north into Happy Valley (Cwm Maethlon).

The road comes to an end just over a mile (1.8 km) from the Bearded Lake, but the best of the views are before you get to the end of the road.
